Some changes

May 29th, 2011

Finally. A new layout. I think I’ve been using the previous layout since December 2009, so… this is long overdue! This one features Portal, which you can read about in the Site section. I also changed around the sections. Some have been rewritten/redone and some have been removed (though they might return later). I think I worked out all the kinks, but let me know if something doesn’t look right!

It’s Memorial Day weekend, and I’m so glad to have tomorrow off. We invited some friends over tomorrow for lunch. We’re going to be grilling burgers and bratwursts :) My fiance and I finally bought a grill (this one) a couple weeks ago. The sad thing is, when we moved into our new house last summer, I said, “the first thing we need to get is a grill”. Well, it took us a year to get around to it XD;; In addition to burgers and brats, we’ve also used it for steaks. We’d also like to try grilling vegetables and other meats like chicken, pork, and fish later on.

I’ve been keeping myself somewhat busy this weekend. Yesterday, I met with 2 more florists for our wedding. That’s still one of the major things I haven’t booked yet. Today, I helped my mom pick out a dress, also for our wedding. What’s annoying is that a lot of places with “mother of the bride” dresses… the styles look “too old” =/ She already looked at non-wedding dresses but didn’t really find one she liked. But! We picked one out today and ordered it, which is this one. I think it’s nice because it’s not “too young” and not “too old” either :3

And now, I need to go shopping for food for tomorrow XD I hope everyone is having a good weekend!

More new things

May 23rd, 2011

Work has been so hectic lately that I was really looking forward to the weekend. It’s over now though! Where did it go? It went by too fast D=

Over the weekend, my fiance and I finally went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to update our registry. We’ve been lazy on filling it out, so it only had 8 items XD;; At the store, they gave us a scanner gun, so that we could scan anything we liked, and it’d add it to our registry. We spent like 2 hours there and added 80 more items XD;; Apparently, we’re supposed to have even more than that so… I guess we’ll have to make another trip!

I also got a chance to play with a new toy I got recently: a wireless remote shutter for my camera. It lets me trigger the camera without being near it. Here’s an example of a shot I did with it:

Who wants cookies?

The remote is in my other hand, and… yes, the camera is actually in the oven XD;; My friend took a photo of me while I was setting it up:

Baking a Canon

That’s not the only toy I got recently. I finally caved. I got a smart phone. I’ve been resisting for a while now. I just didn’t feel like I needed the internet at my fingertips at all times, and seeing people completely addicted to their phones only discouraged me more. But! I’ve come around to seeing its convenience.

I considered a Galaxy-S phone at first. My fiance has one, and I like using it. But, I decided to get something different. I got the black iPhone 4, which I also like so far!

So… yeah, I was pretty behind on the whole smart phone thing for a while, but I’m catching up ^^;;

And now… bed time! It’s late, and I have work tomorrow morning, sigh.

Books and more books

May 12th, 2011

When I was younger, I used to read a lot. I was the nerd who would check out 10+ books at a time from the library. Unfortunately, as I got older, I read less and less until I just stopped reading for fun. There was too much homework and assigned reading from school that I didn’t even enjoy reading anymore.

It wasn’t until recently that I tried to get back into it. I have my on and off phases. Sometimes I spend a lot of time reading and get through a few books quickly, and then some periods I don’t read any books at all. At the moment, these are the books I’m reading or planning to read.

For Fun

  • Last finished: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Stieg Larsson) – The plot seemed really interesting and mysterious, so I finally tried it. I loved it, which is why…
  • Next up: The Girl Who Played With Fire (Stieg Larsson) – …the next book in the series is also next on my reading list. I’ve already bought the 3rd one as well.

Photography

  • Last finished: The Photographer’s Eye (Michael Freeman) – A book on composition, which helped me greatly. It made me see my process and photos in a new way.
  • Next up: Mastering Digital Flash Photography (Chris George) – I’m pretty clueless when it comes to flash photography and lighting equipment. So far, this has been a decent introduction to it.

Web Usability

  • Last finished: Don’t Make Me Think (Steve Krug) – A short and easy read, but it brings up a lot of good points. Sometimes common sense doesn’t sink in until someone spells it out for you.
  • Next up: Letting Go of the Words (Janice (Ginny) Redish) – Many people don’t realize that writing for the web should be different than writing for anything else. While I have a general idea, I wanted to learn more.

Sewing

And I’m always looking for more books to add to the list, so if you have recommends, I’m listening! As for the types I’m most interested in, it’s mystery books, usually crime/murder mysteries. I am also looking for more good informative books related to my hobbies :3
