When I was younger, I used to read a lot. I was the nerd who would check out 10+ books at a time from the library. Unfortunately, as I got older, I read less and less until I just stopped reading for fun. There was too much homework and assigned reading from school that I didn’t even enjoy reading anymore.
It wasn’t until recently that I tried to get back into it. I have my on and off phases. Sometimes I spend a lot of time reading and get through a few books quickly, and then some periods I don’t read any books at all. At the moment, these are the books I’m reading or planning to read.
For Fun
- Last finished: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Stieg Larsson) – The plot seemed really interesting and mysterious, so I finally tried it. I loved it, which is why…
- Next up: The Girl Who Played With Fire (Stieg Larsson) – …the next book in the series is also next on my reading list. I’ve already bought the 3rd one as well.
Photography
- Last finished: The Photographer’s Eye (Michael Freeman) – A book on composition, which helped me greatly. It made me see my process and photos in a new way.
- Next up: Mastering Digital Flash Photography (Chris George) – I’m pretty clueless when it comes to flash photography and lighting equipment. So far, this has been a decent introduction to it.
Web Usability
- Last finished: Don’t Make Me Think (Steve Krug) – A short and easy read, but it brings up a lot of good points. Sometimes common sense doesn’t sink in until someone spells it out for you.
- Next up: Letting Go of the Words (Janice (Ginny) Redish) – Many people don’t realize that writing for the web should be different than writing for anything else. While I have a general idea, I wanted to learn more.
Sewing
- Next up: The Costume Technician’s Handbook (Rosemary Ingham, Liz Covey) – This seems to be recommended among costume makers. I’m hoping to learn a lot from it.
And I’m always looking for more books to add to the list, so if you have recommends, I’m listening! As for the types I’m most interested in, it’s mystery books, usually crime/murder mysteries. I am also looking for more good informative books related to my hobbies :3

Hi Cat! I’m back! I hope you still remember me :) Good to see that your blog’s still active. I’m not a fan of books. Never was and probably never will be? Do you have like an online account which keeps tracks of the books you read? I think sites like Shelfari? Seems like you’re gonna be enjoying in online communities like that :)
I too used to be into reading when I was younger. In elementary school and middle school it was all about fantasy novels; made me wish how life could be filled with magic. In my freshman year of high school, I was really into anime and manga. From that point, I was into classic books and young adult novels (mainly classics since they helped me prepare for college).
I recently spent around $200 on new books so I can build up my library (I’ve always wanted to have my own personal library); granted, it’s not that big but it’s nice to start somewhere. I haven’t really read any of the books myself but I plan to this summer sometime.
Reading takes me to places I never really knew were possible. It truly is amazing how far your imagination can go.
I rarely read novels nowadays and my genre is classic romance.. :3 for now, it’s all manga and art books/biography.. hahaha.. but I want to try and learn sewing too, so I’m gonna check that out..
couple of years ago, I enjoy reading too; but I never really like the stuff I read from school.. maybe because we have to write a hundred page essay after.. hahaha.. but yep, me too, now that I am older, there are so many stuff going on in my life that I no more time to I sit down and finish a book for a day..
I can relate with you so much when it comes to books! I used to read books as much as I could when I was younger, too. It also helped that I had friends who were even more into books than I was, so they would always give recommendations and I always had them to discuss them with. And then when we moved here, books became my best friends during lunch (I was in 12th grade and kind of an antisocial), so even if I wasn’t finishing a book in a day or a week, at least I was constantly reading. College definitely made me get rid of my reading time–I actually have books in my bookshelf that I bought 2 years ago and have never even read (there was a Waldenbooks in the mall that was closing, so everything was 40% off; needless to say, I went crazy). :[ Although the last 2 months of 2010 became pretty good because I started reading a disturbing amount of Draco/Hermione fanfiction (I’m pretty sure that’s all I did for those 2 months that I decided I was going to do what I damn well felt like doing–I read). And now I’m actually looking into getting a Kindle, so hopefully soon, I’ll be back to incorporating reading into my daily life again as well! :D
I loved to read books when I was younger too. Now that I’m in school, I don’t have time to much except fanfiction and manga, lol. My last book was Around The World In 80 Days by Jules Verne two-three years ago. I love adventure and fantasy books but still haven’t gotten around to read the last two books of Harry Potter! I also want to read Journey To The Center Of The Earth and a World Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea but UUUGH — so little time and too much to do.
Since you like Stieg Larsson’s The Millenium-series, why not check out the Harry Hole-series by Jo Nesbø? Norwegian writer who’s doing well in the literature lists around the world with his crime/mystery books. :3
