San Japan 6

August 20th, 2013

I was at San Japan last Saturday! It’s an Anime convention in San Antonio, which is about an hour away from where I live. This time I went with a couple coworkers, and… this was their very first Anime con! I wasn’t sure what they’d think of it, but they ended up having a blast. I guess I’ll have a couple extra people going to Anime cons with me now :)

San Japan is one of the cons that I schedule photoshoots for instead of cosplaying. I mentioned before that I normally post my schedule, and interested cosplayers will contact me. Well, that didn’t happen this time! I had enough people interested ahead of time, that I was able to schedule all spots privately.

3 of the 4 shoots were with cosplayers I’ve photographed before. This is awesome to me because:

  1. It means they like my works and like working with me to ask for a photoshoot again.
  2. I enjoyed working with these 3 in the past, so it’s kind of a relief to know that it’ll probably turn out well like last time.

Without further ado, here’s a preview from each shoot!

Behind the scenes: cookies self portrait

August 10th, 2013

One of my favorite things to see on photography blogs are the “behind the scenes” of how they took their photos. It’s a great way to learn and get ideas for your own photos. I thought that once in a while, I could do the same with one of my photos :)

I’m starting with a photo I took a couple years ago of myself. It’s still my favorite self portrait, so perhaps you’ve seen me using it on other sites.

Who wants cookies?

The story: My friend, Ben, and I were taking part in a weekly photography challenge, and the theme was “Openings“. Ben originally suggested taking the photo from the refrigerator, but I suggested using the oven since I’m known for my baking.

Shut up and watch the movie

August 4th, 2013

I’ve been called a “Drafthouse snob” before, and I take no offense to it. I like being a Drafthouse snob. In other words, the only movie theater I go to now is the Alamo Drafthouse, which is a chain that started here in Austin, TX.

The moment you walk into one of its theaters, you realize it’s not a normal theater. Boring theater ads aren’t playing before the movie; random clips related to the movie are instead. When I saw Pacific Rim, clips from other kaiju movies played. I saw the new Wolverine movie just recently, and I got to see clips from the Wolverine Anime.

It isn’t just that though. There are 2 main reasons why I only go to the Drafthouse.

1. You can order food and drinks during the movie. As in, actual entree-type foods, not just overpriced theater snacks. We often choose dinner and lunch times to see movies now.

2. Strict no talking and no texting rules. You can actually get kicked out if you keep talking or texting during a movie. They’ll give you a warning, and if you don’t heed it, you’re out without a refund.
