Liebster Award

LiebsterAward-300x276

So uh… I’m a terrible person. I was nominated for a Liebster Award a few times last year, and I kept the answers in a draft… then forgot about them! I never posted them! Many thanks to those who have nominated me and sorry for answering sooooo late. (Like, seriously late. A few are from over a year ago, so I’ve had to change some of my answers.)

Becca nominated me just recently (thank you!), and it reminded me that I have these other answers stashed away. Instead of letting the entry go to waste, I figured I’d post them all at once :) There were some repeat questions, so I grouped them together at the bottom. This will be a long post!

From Becca

Starting with questions from Becca, since these are the most recent! Thanks for nominating me!

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a month, where would you go?
I’d go back to Japan :D There are more places I want to see!

japan_1029_01b

What is your favorite book and why?
Hm… I think it’d be The Design of Everyday Things. I love reading books about user experience, and this one really changed my view on UX/UI, both for work and in general. It’s amazing that this book was originally written in 1988, and while some things in it are dated, the general ideas still feel relevant.

What is your favorite Disney Princess (or lack thereof) and why?
Princess Leia is technically a Disney princess now, right? ;) I love Star Wars and how Leia isn’t afraid to be a part of the fight.

Describe your most embarrassing moment.
I think I block out these moments from memory because I blanked on this, haha. Though recently, I left my computer unlocked at my desk, and a coworker decided to prank me by installing a Nic Cage plugin on my browser. I didn’t notice until in a meeting when suddenly GIANT NIC CAGE photos replaced elements on pages I was trying to show. THANKS COWORKER.

Who is the biggest inspiration in your life?
There are several that inspire me. For example, my parents came to the US barely knowing English and worked hard to get where they are. The founders at my company are also pretty amazing. They managed to grow the company without losing the company culture, which was one of my fears as we grew. They continue to be transparent with us and just be normal people around us.

If you had to pick just one meal to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Aahh, this is tough to choose. It’d be pizza, sushi, or ramen :) I just don’t get tired of them.

What is your favorite family tradition?
My family follows old Chinese traditions, like paying respects to our ancestors. On special occasions, we place food in front of their photos, light incense, and bow 3 times as an offering to them in the afterlife. Then we have the food for dinner, which are traditional Chinese dishes. It just feels nice to know that we don’t forget people who have left us.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, would you go back and do anything differently?
When I was younger, I did some rash things that ended a couple friendships. If I could go back, I’d do things differently to prevent that from happening.

How would you define love?
When you find that person that you deeply care about and who feels like another part of you. You don’t mind their presence around you all the time and sitting in silence together isn’t awkward. It just feels right to be together.

If you were elected president, what is the first thing you would do?
I would have said make gay marriage legal, but Obama beat me to it ;) I think I would make education free because it’s ridiculous how high college tuition is now.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Night owl for sure. I hate getting up early and am more productive at night!

From Holly

Holly actually nominated me twice last year! Thanks Holly! These are questions from the second time, since they are more recent :)

What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Hawaii – it’s beautiful, has great weather year-round, and is just soooo relaxing to be there. My favorite islands are Kauai and Big Island because they’re quiet and very scenic.

kauai_05

Who would be your dream date?
haha, I’m not sure. I guess I never really had a thought of who or what my dream date would be. My first date with my husband was actually at an arcade though and that’s totally my style :)

What’s your favourite album of all time?
My favorites keep changing through the years. When I was younger, I probably would have said Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park. Then I loved Showbiz by Muse, and then I got into metal and was really into Brave New World by Iron Maiden. Now I’m not sure!

What’s your favourite drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)?
Non-alcoholic would be Dr. Pepper. Alcoholic would be a Lava Flow; it’s like a piña colada except it has strawberries in it.

What’s your biggest fear?
Losing important people in my life.

How do you stay motivated as a blogger?
Other bloggers! I love being inspired by other blogs and having people read mine too.

What’s your greatest achievement in life?
Getting a degree and a job in something I love, then rising to a leadership position in a short amount of time :D

Who is your favourite fictional character?
Aahhh, so many characters to choose from. I think I like video game characters the most, like Link (Legend of Zelda), Kirby, Tali (Mass Effect), Mordin(Mass Effect), and Ezio (Assassin’s Creed).

Which month is your favourite, and why?
October – the weather is nicer, it’s when our wedding anniversary is, and it’s usually when we take vacation!

From Tara

Thanks Tara! She nominated me back in January 2014. Have I mentioned how late I am with this?

What is the hobby you’ve been doing the longest? What influenced you to that hobby?
I can’t remember if I got into gaming or art first, but gaming is the one I’ve done consistently throughout my life. I remember my cousins bringing their NES to my grandparents house and how much I loved playing on it. I got my own after that, and I’ve been gaming ever since.

games_pile_02

What is your favourite techno gadget, that one thing you couldn’t live without?
My gaming computer at home!

Are there any thing you’re looking forward to in 2014 2015? What are they?
We’re trying to figure out a trip for later this year :) Currently deciding between Hawaii again or Alaska.

What languages can you speak other than English? How well do you speak them?
I can speak Cantonese and Mandarin, but I’m very rusty in both. I know both enough to get by if I had to. I also learned a bit of Japanese for my Japan trip.

What’s your stance on eBooks versus paper books?
It’s up to each person’s preference. I prefer eBooks for things that are just text, and I like to read them on my iPad mini. I still buy the physical books for comics and manga.

Which tourist sight do you want to visit in the future?
Um… I’d like to visit bunny island in Japan…

If you could meet one historical person, who would it be and why?
Nikola Tesla – his achievements were amazing and what happened to him wasn’t right.

Which social media do you like using the most?
Tumblr – It’s been great for my food blog, and my other tumblr helped me book like 70% of my photoshoots. I know there’s a lot of crap on tumblr, but I like the format of it, and there are actually a lot of good tumblr blogs around.

From Tiff

Thanks Tiff! This is kind of embarrassing because this one was from 2013. I love how Tiff wrote her questions though, so I wanted to make sure I included them, even if this is super, super late!

What is your spirit animal?

You have participated in a scientific experiment that will pay your bills until you fall over & die. Your blood contains the cure for all major diseases. There is a single side effect: the next meal you eat will be the only meal you can taste for the rest of your life, no matter what you eat. The only exception are drinks. What meal do you choose to eat next?
Same as I said above. It’d be a tough choice between pizza, sushi, and ramen :)

If you could be any Disney character (Pixar included), whom would you be?
Violet (Incredibles) – I wanna turn invisible tooooo.

If you were a sandwich, what kind of sandwich would best describe your personality?
Peanut butter and jelly – old school and perfect for when you’re super lazy.

What was the last book you read that completely changed your life or world view?
The Design of Everyday Things like I mentioned above, which really changed my view of user experience. The Photographer’s Eye also totally changed my view on photo composition. After reading it, I looked back on my photos and hated all of them. It definitely improved how I compose my photos.

books_01

You are given a break from every job, school, or life obligations & are allowed to travel anywhere in the world for a year. Where will you go & what would you do?
I’d want to visit every Hawaiian island, visit more of the rural cities in China, and travel around Japan and Australia as well.

What was the best meal of your life that would increase the likelihood of you punching people in the kidneys if they told you they ate it all?
Have you ever had the ruben with pastrami at Katz’s Deli in NYC? *drools* So good.

What was the most hilarious thing anyone has ever said to you that still cracks you up when you think about it, making you look like a crazy person? (Can be a story or a single line).
IT’S PIKACHU.

From Jenny

Thanks Jenny! I believe this is from July 2014, so it’s not as terribly late as the others…

If you could spend the day with anyone, real or fictional, dead or alive, who would it be?
I think Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden is so cool. I’d like to meet and hang out with him.

What’s your dream job?
I’m pretty much where I want to be – programming at a tech company with a laid back environment and very flexible schedules. Once upon a time, I wanted to get into the game industry, but I have friends at game companies who deal with bad crunch periods, so now I’m unsure on that =/

What’s one beauty product you can’t live without?
Not really a beauty product, but my dermatologist prescribed some Clindamycin pads for me to apply to my face. It has solved my acne problem, and I love it!

What’s your favorite store to shop?
Does Amazon count? ;)

If you could go back in time and give yourself 1 advice, what would it be?
What you do before college doesn’t matter as much as you think it does.

Who is your style icon?
I don’t think I have one!

If you could change one thing about your life now, what would it be?
I think the only changes I’d make are ones that I am capable of. Really, I need to change how lazy I am. I should be exercising more, sewing more, organizing the house more, etc etc.

Shared/Repeated Questions

Why did you start blogging?
I just like writing about my life I think. I started doing it in the updates section of one of my sites, so I split it off onto its own blog.

What is your biggest pet peeve? / What’s your biggest online peeve?
I don’t like it when people act arrogant just because they aren’t into something popular or “mainstream”. That’s fine if you don’t like them, but don’t act like you’re better than everyone else for it. It is possible to express dislike for something without being an ass about it, ya know.

If you won a huge sum of money right now, what would you do with it? / If you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?
Pay off the house, buy a Tesla, put the rest into savings.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? / Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Probably with kids actually, haha. Even though I’ve been on the fence about kids, I have a feeling I will have them.

What’s one movie you never get tired of watching? / What’s your favourite movie?
Ocean’s 11. I feel like I’ve watched it like 10 times already.

This is a good way to combine all your Liebster Award questions :D Good idea! And I don’t mind the lateness at all! At least it’s up now! ^^ And now to answer your questions for fun!

Toilet paper, over or under? (This is a serious question that can break relationships ok) ~ Under. It just makes logical sense to put it that way because it rips easier for me!

What is your most memorable vacation so far and why? ~ Tokyo 2010! Best six days of my life of yolo/solo travelling :D It was a blast seeing more of my happy place!

What’s your favorite thing to have for breakfast? ~ Hash brown or tater tots. Seriously, they are addicting!

What is a skill you wish you had? ~ I wish I had better writing skills and piano playing skills XD But as for a skill I totally do not have? Drawing.

    What song are you currently addicted to? ~ At the moment . . . “Baba Yetu” XD;

If someone said they’d cover the cost of the next thing you buy, what would it be? ~ A DIGITAL PIANO! :D

Do you like collecting anything? ~ I collect BL/yaoi mangas. I also seemed to have developed a bag collection. Plus I collect DVDs/Blu-rays of movies/animes I like.

Is there a language you wish you knew? ~ I wish I knew Japanese better. As for a language I don’t know entirely — Maori is a language that I wouldn’t mind learning. Their language and culture fascinate me.

What is your favorite childhood show? ~ Girl. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s. My answer is going to be a mile long LOLOL. But the ones that are coming to my mind right now are: Madoking Granzort, Dodge Danpei, Ducktales, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Rose of Versailles.

A cupcake, brownie, and cookie are on a table, but you can only grab one. Which one do you choose? ~ COOKIES. Give me chocolate chip cookies — especially the home-made ones!

What’s the best movie you’ve seen this year so far? ~ Inside Out? That’s the only real new movie I’ve seen this year.

  • Nancy says:

Going back to Japan sounds like the best place to travel to for a month! I’ve been hearing so many great things about it! Princess Leia is technically a Disney princess since StarWars belongs to Disney now… Which makes her an awesome one for knowing how to fight ;). Then it comes to tech stuff, people know how to pull the biggest pranks there with some simple macros XD.

I would eat sushi as well for the rest of my life XD. Education can be expensive, depending on which route you take and how “well off” your family is. Most of the time, the middle class gets screwed because they don’t qualify for aid and don’t have enough for a full ride paid by the parents :$.

I haven’t heard of Linkin Park in forever! I always thought ebooks are pretty useful, you can have a bunch of text in a device and don’t need to carry books around. I have to carry my 2″ security book everywhere and it’s pretty heavy! Having an eBook version of it would’ve been nicer ;). Your work sounds awesome, the environment is laid back and you guys still get the job done. I don’t think I would be able to work at a job where I have to wear a suit every day :$.

A Tesla sounds nice about now with gas being like $5.50 per gallon @___@!

Thank you for the nomination ^___^~ I have a lot waiting in the bank, I should do a collection post like you! :D

  • Jhanz says:

Interesting answers! I no longer know how many times I’ve been tagged for the Liebster Award, but I guess I’ll do the same thing that you did — I’ll just compress it on one post hehe! :)

  • Holland says:

I was wondering why this post was so long, and then I realized it was basically numerous posts in one XD

Question 1 has a right answer and a wrong one, anyone who wants to disagree can just fight me! ;)

  • Becca says:

I loved reading your answers, Cat! I would love to go to Japan one day. That picture is just beautiful!

HAHA! I love your toilet paper question! It drives me insane when someone puts the toilet paper under – it definitely goes over! Not sure how Andrew does it, but we may need to have a talk when we get married. ;)

If anyone wants to cover the cost of my wedding, that would be awesome.

  • Raisa says:

Waaahh so many nominations! XD I would also provide free college tuition if I became president, and free universal healthcare too. I’d also raise the federal minimum wage because people having to work two jobs to make ends meet is insane! Poverty is a collective problem, not an individual one.

I know all these changes will be very difficult to implement the way our politics work, but one can dream.

  • Chynna says:

Haha, I’ve been nominated before and I didn’t post up my answers until like a year later. So bad. What a beautiful picture of Japan! I love Princess Leia, I’d love to cosplay as her one day.

BAHAHA, Nic Cage man. I’m a night owl too :) I really want to go to Hawaii! There’s a bunny island?! Just for kicks, I’m going to answer your questions!

Toilet paper, over or under? (This is a serious question that can break relationships ok)
Under. Although my boyf literally sideeyes me when I do that.

What is your most memorable vacation so far and why?
Barcelona. Met loads of amazing new people and created so many memories. Plus I love the sun, sea and alcohol.

What’s your favorite thing to have for breakfast?
    BACON.

What is a skill you wish you had?
    Oooh, I don’t know.

What song are you currently addicted to?
    Sugar – Maroon 5

If someone said they’d cover the cost of the next thing you buy, what would it be?
    A house.

    Do you like collecting anything?
Books. Tons and tons of books.

Is there a language you wish you knew?
    Korean

What is your favorite childhood show?
    Pokemon <3

A cupcake, brownie, and cookie are on a table, but you can only grab one. Which one do you choose?
    A brownie. Nom nom nom

What’s the best movie you’ve seen this year so far?
It'd have to be Magic Mike XXL, lol.

  • Claudine says:

Wow, you’ve got lots of nominations! :D It was really fun reading your answers too! Better late than never ;)

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and reading your posts makes me so jealous. I would like to go to the same places that you went to! :D

Oh goody, I’m so glad that you are a Star Wars fan too! :D Princess Leia can definitely kick some ass!

  • Ongaku says:

Haha, wow you are terrible, so many you didn’t do until now! lol jk I had fun reading that though. Got to learn even more about you ♥

  • Michelle says:

This is too awesome. I had fun reading this~! Wow, I’m just surprised so many people could come up with different questions all the same. XD

  • Uglyfish says:

That was a mighty backlog of awards! I really enjoyed reading all of your answers! How did people in the meeting respond to the Nick Cage plug in? That sounds like the kind of embarrassing thing my co-workers would do. Hopefully everyone found it funny! I used to want to work in the games industry but it seems very challenging, in a bad way. I’ve got a few friends who do voice acting for games, so I wouldn’t mind doing that! Thanks for the nomination, I filled it in. You asked some great questions – particularly the breakfast one =p

    • Cat says:

haha, they were as confused as I was about the Nic Cage images, and then we tried to figure out who did it. (I guessed who it was on my first try XD)

  • Olivia says:

    Hmm, I thought I already commented, but I guess I didn’t? o.O

Anyway. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE AWARD I’M SO HONORED AND HAPPY AND AHHHHHHHH

I’m a night owl too! I wish I was an early bird – it seems to handy! But I’m just tired and unfocused in the morning x_x
I love your Hawaii photo! I really want to visit the USA, and Hawaii is high on the list. I’ve always thought of it as the perfect get-away resort island because of all the references in movies and tv (and pizza Hawaii *_*)

KIRBY IS BAE. it’s weird how much I relate to a character. Happiest when surrounded by food = me

OH MY GOD. When you go to Bunny Island, please take me with me. I can fit in your suitcase! I just need feeding every once in a while.

I think I replayed the ‘IT’S PIKACHU’ video about 10 times because it get funnier every time. So nostalgic, too. Pokémon was the only thing to get me out of bed on Sunday morning.

Thanks again for the award!! <3

Sorry! This entry is old, so comments are closed. Check out my recent blog posts though!
