What I’m Up To, #8

February 2nd, 2016

I’m excited to do this “What I’m Up To” entry because I’ve been productive with my hobbies lately! I believe this is the first time I’ve included “What I’m Drawing” as a section too. I don’t draw as much as I used to, and every time I do it, I realize how much I miss it. So without further ado, here’s what I’m up to lately in each of my hobbies!

What I’m Drawing

It’s been an annual tradition for me to draw something for Chinese New Year, and it’s about to be the year of the monkey! I was dreading it at first because I had never drawn a monkey before and thought I’d be terrible at it, but it actually turned out alright :)

This is actually my 12th year in a row, which means I’ve made a full circle. I have now drawn every animal in the Chinese zodiac! This time around, I decided to take a photo with my phone along the way. Here are all of the progress photos, so you can see how the drawing came together. I start with a basic sketch and then layer on details with Prismacolor pencils.

What I’m Sewing

Remember how in November, I mentioned that I’m working on Tashigi from One Piece? Uh, I just now started work on it. Yay procrastination. I did things backwards as I normally deal with the wig last, but I did it first this time!

I straightened it, trimmed it, and styled the bangs. The glasses are also new glasses! Though I was originally going to put non-prescription lenses in the frames, I ended up falling in love with them and had my prescription put in. Now I can use them for both everyday use and cosplay ;)

Next up is sewing a mock-up for the jacket and shirt. Like I mentioned in my “Beginner Cosplay Tips” entry, I like to make a mock-up in muslin first, and I also like finding existing patterns to alter. These are the two I bought, which are not exact so they definitely need alterations. Hopefully I can have some mock-ups to show in a later entry. (If not here, then definitely on my cosplay blog.)

What I’m Photographing

In the first week of January, I did a few photoshoots at Ikkicon. Unfortunately, it slipped my mind, and I didn’t advertise my spots until a few days before. I was still able to get a couple sign-ups from cosplayers I’ve worked with before, though not a full schedule as usual.

I really enjoyed the shoots I did though! I love being able to play with different lighting, and we went with a “creepy” look for two of them. Here are some previews from the photoshoots.

This time around, I’m skipping the “What I’m Playing” section since I’ve been addicted to a couple games (Happy Home Designer and Binding of Isaac) and haven’t started on anything new. Though, I should really get moving if I am to reach my 30 games a year goal ;) Maybe next time I will have something to say for that section!

You are so talented with drawing! The monkey does look like an actual monkey! Hurray for your annual tradition!~ Your progress looks amazing. It’s interesting to see how drawings come along. Your shading skills = 1337 like your photography skillz ;).

Your wig looks like a job well done! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the outfit done!~

I love your photoshoots! Everyone in the picture looks so natural in their natural habitats XD.

Good luck with getting your gaming list down ;)

  • Tara says:

That drawing looks super good! I think you should draw more :D But it’s good that you’ve kept up with this tradition!

The wig looks accurate! Can’t wait to see your whole outfit.

I really like the shots! The creepy photos definitely have that creepy vibe to them. :D

Thanks for sharing what you’ve been up to lately! :)

  • Regan says:

That is an amazing drawing of a monkey and I love how you’ve showed us how it was done. I cannot draw for toffee and I’m so jealous!

  • Liv says:

Ooo cute monkey! I just realized that’s my zodiac sign which means I’m 24 this year …. AH.

I LOVE the pink frames! I would definitely wear those for everyday too haha.

I think 30 games is a tough goal if you’re playing easily addicted games such as Animal Crossing, or in my case Pokemon. I spent 380 hours on Pokemon X while I only spend 5-6 on indie games! LOL. I recently have been addicted to Mark of the Ninja, I beat the game and have gone back to unlock achievements because it’s so fun to sneak around and attack the guards! :P

  • Kya says:

I absolutely adore your drawing, the detail is so good! It’s also really cool that you have been doing it for so long and have completed all 12! Nice work! :D

The wig looks really good and I love the glasses. It’s handy that you can use them for cosplay and everyday, and they really suit you. :D Good luck wit finishing the costume!

The photos look so awesome. :D

  • Ongaku says:

Wow, your monkey drawing is awesome! I wish I could draw like that. You should post pictures of all zodiac animals side by side now. :)

Good luck with the cosplay. I have been procrastinating bad as well. I want to do Kyoko from Skip Beat as Setsu, but the wig styling is going to be an adventure on that one.

  • Pauline says:

The drawing is amazing Cat! I’m very impressed! You’ve got me wanting to draw again, I haven’t picked up a pencil to draw anything in so long!

I love your new glasses too; I recently got new glasses myself. I’m sort of regretting not getting a smaller frame though, youre rocking them girl!! Good luck getting the cosplay together!

The photography looks great as per usual ;)

  • Jade Rachel says:

That’s the first time you’ve drawn a monkey? WOW It’s incredible! Great job

    And cute new glasses

  • Ella says:

Ahh yes, Chinese New Year is coming up on the 8th of this month. That is a wonderful drawing, Cat! You did an incredible job for a first attempt at drawing a monkey. :D I really like the photography. Very well done, I love the lighting as well. I am still not sure what Cosplay is but it looks fun! :) Don’t worry about procrastination. I think when we get caught up in so much we tend to sort of forget some things.

  • Jenny says:

I love your annual Chinese New Year drawings! I usually don’t like monkeys, but your drawing is really cute!

  • Georgie says:

I love the monkey, it’s so cute!

Shame you didn’t get as many sign-ups for your cosplay photos as usual, but you did a good job! I am sure the people you photographed are pleased with the results.

Awesome glasses, too. It’s great that you can now wear that style all the time! :D

  • Becca says:

Uhm, I think when you said “alright,” you meant awesome! Your monkey drawing is so cute! I love how you did the hair!

I love the wig! It looks very natural – so I can’t wait to see what the whole outfit will look like put together! I used to have a pair of red glasses but they got broken. Yours are really cute!

  • Michelle says:

Such a cute monkey! You rock at drawing! :D You’re so talented!

I love when you do cosplays because you seem like a pro! Keep showing us your work because we all love it.

  • Holly says:

It’s really cool to see the progress you made on your drawing. I think the end result looks great! So cute!

I’ve also been enjoying Happy Home Designer. I was a bit worried about whether I would like it or not as it’s not a normal Animal Crossing game but I’ve found it to be very relaxing to play. Makes me think I should have been an interior designer! Haha, just kidding!

  • remakestyle says:

I have to say that you are really creative. :) What type of color pencils do you use? Any tutorial on how to draw like that? I would love to learn the basics. ^^

    • Cat says:

I use Prismacolor pencils. I took classes when I was younger and am pretty much self taught now. Because of that, I don’t have any tutorials to link to, sorry!

  • Amy says:

That drawing is brilliant! I love how you’ve done the monkey’s fur. I haven’t really drawn anything since I was doing my A-Levels. I wish I had more time to do that now!

I love your cosplays, they’re always so good. There’s so many characters I want to cosplay at the moment. Again, it’s just finding the time.
    Xxx

  • Brandy says:

That monkey drawing is amazing! So is the wig. Can’t wait to see your whole outfit.

  • Jamie says:

Oh my gosh, you are a good artist! Believe it or not, I was taking Chinese one year in college and well, the Chinese new year happened to land on my birthday. I think it was the year of the Rabbit or Tiger. Anyways, it was pretty cool to have Chinese New Year land on my birthday. I think that was the only time it did. I haven’t drawn in quite some time as well. I need to get back into the habit of it.

  • Kim says:

That drawing is amazing, you’re very talented. I’ve cosplayed but generally stick to characters that have the same hair colour as me so I’ve not had to deal with wigs yet! Your wig is looking good, I love the glasses, great colour. :-)

  • Claudine says:

The monkey drawing is so amazing! :) I’d love to see your drawings of the other Chinese zodiac animals if you still have them, I think it would be really cool to see all of them together in one photo :P

I love the wig! I always love seeing your costumes and photos for cosplay because you’re really good at doing them :)

  • Raisa says:

Hooray for drawing all twelve zodiacs! Your drawing is so cute and I loved seeing the progress. Hope you had a lovely Lunar New Year! :D

  • Chynna says:

I was born in the Year of the Monkey (’92), and I was so excited but then my friend told me that we will need to work extra hard to prosper or else we will fail. Haha. I love your drawing – you’re so talented :D The monkey is cute!

My friend would love your cosplay! She loves One Piece :) Good luck with making everything!

Sorry! This entry is old, so comments are closed. Check out my recent blog posts though!
